During my first week of exploration, the main methods of investigation I used were photography, relief prints, mapping, sketching, writing, and the mapping of certain human behaviors throughout the alleyway. One of the experiments that interested me the most was sketching my space, but without my glasses on so as to create a different perspective.

My experiment of sketching without glasses on led me to trying two different ways of creating an abstract of the space I was observing. For the first, I experimented with focusing and unfocusing the lens of my camera to create that same blurring effect I see without glasses. This felt too literal to me, so I moved on to writing, as this felt like the most accurate representation of the emotional response I was having to the alleyway. However, I felt that this lacked a visual component that felt vital to portraying the space authentically. It was then that I had the idea to combine writing and sketching to create word art, and began writing an essay.

Eventually, I finished my essay based on three key instances of observation, and began creating my artwork with these words. In no particular order, and following no rules or patterns on how the sentences flowed or were placed, I drew a representation of the fear I felt standing in the dark on the edge of my balcony stairs.
